How is this possible?

  • 1/3 of high school graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives.
  • 42 percent of college graduates never read another book after college.
  • 80 percent of U.S. families did not buy or read a book last year.
  • 70 percent of U.S. adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years.

…and me? I have $5 in library fines each week. Awhile ago we were trying to figure out how many books I read each year. I figured in the 200 range, Dan thought it would be closer to 100. Some people are closet drinkers, I’m a closet reader. I find it almost uncomfortable to not have anything to read. I get all “arm flappy” and anxious if my to read shelf is empty. I’ve been known to read the phone-book and even the World Almanac in dire circumstances. Having our books in storage this year has been very trying for me. I have no backups for when I don’t have time to get to the library. One of our neighbours was moving out in November, and I scavenged 40 year old copies of parenting books to help me through the low periods. (Did you know that in the 60’s it was no longer recommended to TIE your child to his crib to keep him in bed in the mornings? It’s amazing how children were coddled back then.)

Just to keep count, and to put them some place I’d remember…here’s this year’s list in progress.
