the things You Learn

On the night before McKay started kindergarten, we had a special dessert (wild blackberry galette. Sorry, it’s all gone.), and McKay got to blow out a candle to make a wish about the coming school year. His wish was to learn how to read.

So far, McKay has had a total of three hours and 12 minutes of class. Yesterday and today were short “transition” days for the class; they go into their “full” three-something hour day tomorrow. We had this conversation on the walk from kindergarten to his day care:

L: So what did you do today?

M: We started writing in jolurnals!

D: That’s awesome! What did you write?

M: I drew a picture. We’re going to do more tomorrow.

L: Wow, that sounds really cool.

M: Yeah. (pause) Didn’t learn to read yet, though.

His Dad quit first grade after two weeks because he hadn’t learned to read yet. Is it the gene pool?

For those of us who may not remember when we couldn’t read, this is a good reminder of how important it is for kids and how they measure their own success (sometimes wrongly).

You know, I don’t remember learning to read. I remember learning to read “in my head” the Christmas I was 5.5…but I don’t have any memories of the peering at letters and not knowing what they said.

Dang, McKay is only going to school for 3 hours, did I understand you correctly? They have Max in first grade now, going from 8-4p with homework everyday! Whew! He says he’s liking it but I donno, seems like a lot. Anyway the only choice we have in school or no school or home school.
