McKay had his 5yr old check up today;
3′7″ and 43 pounds. Still riding the 50/75 percentile curve for both.
Also, unfortunately, needed 3 shots. We originally got a notice from the school saying the nurse would give him these shots on October 31st. This was _so_ not going to happen away from me.
The Georgia schedule is a bit staggered to the BC one and does not include meningococcal C. He also needed his second MMR, his last Pertussis, Diptheria, Tetanus, and Polio booster. Both us, and his Doctor agreed that three shots at once was alot. But she prepped all three and we thought we would see how it went. (Parenting low point being when she asked if we’d given him Tylenol before the appointment).
Like last time, what a brave sheep. With full eye contact with mama, and a strident “Owwwww” each time, he managed all three with tears streaming down his face. Finished it up with a trip to Dairy Queen and lots of hot fudge sauce.
On the neuronal front: this boy WANTS to read. When he was way little, he used to walk around in his crib at night learning to pull up and then to walk. Now, he reads at every opportunity. Reads letters off of signs, the milk carton, and most nights, we have to insist on lights out because he’s copying words out of books onto pieces of paper. It is truly awe inspiring. I’ve never had the privelege of watching a human being gain literacy before.
There is the heartbreak (and thrill) of him crossing out a word, and carefully writing NO beside it when he’s made a mistake and the confusion of looking at a word of which he is SO proud, and not having a clue what it is! (Key here, is to make sure you’ve SEEN all of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and KNOW the character names before your kid reads the book!)

i don’t remember how i first learned to read, but in 1st and 2nd grade i had this big children’s illustrated dictionary. i started at the beginning, checking off words as i memorized the spellings (the words were pretty easy, i think i knew all the meanings already).
i had a fabulous sense of accomplishment flipping through all the pages i’d finished.
also, i remember being pretty impressed with the concept of WRITING on a BOOK!! OMG!! sacrilege is so fun!!

“A” is for “Alfred”, the Wayne Manor butler, who’s never been known to complain.
“B” is for “Batcave”…
OK that’s about all I remember, but I still remember it. Thanks Mom!
I too used to read the dictionary.
