If I Were in Charge of the World
By Judith Viorst
If I were in charge of the world
There’d be brighter night lights,
Healthier hamsters, and
Basketball baskets forty-eight inches lower.
If I were in charge of the world
You wouldn’t have lonely.
You wouldn’t have clean.
You wouldn’t have bedtimes.
Or “Don’t punch your sister.”
You wouldn’t even have sisters.
If I were in charge of the world
A chocolate sundae with whipped cream and nuts
would be a vegetable.
All 007 movies would be G.
And a person who sometimes forgets to brush,
And sometimes forgets to flush,
Would still be allowed to be
In charge of the world.
I read this poem to the children and this conversation followed.
“No ones in charge of the world not even the police.” Mckay
“Yeah just the world is in charge of the world.” Nathan J.
“No, god is in charge of the world.” Sacha
“Yeah God makes most things. God can actually make you, Sheila.” Sarah
“Some Kings are in charge of the world and some Queen’s.” Natasha
“Nobody is in charge of the world.” Mckay
“God is.” Sacha
“Well, God isn’t even real, he is just a book and a movie.” Mckay
“God is in our hearts.” Faye
“God makes trees and air.” Sarah
“I know how to make trees!” Natasha
“Yeah all you have to do is put a tree in the ground and give it water.” Mckay
“No, a seed.” Sacha
Here is the Lucky groups rendition of:
If I were in Charge of the World.
If I were in charge of the world
I would say you wouldn’t have to have money to buy all the toys and treats
And I would have all the toys and treats
And there wouldn’t be any cavities.
Sacha
If I were in charge of the world
I would make books and I would also make teddy bears.
And I would make candy!
Mckay
If I were in charge of the world
I’ll call the police if there is any emergencies
I would take away teachers
And Build up a house
Sarah
If I were in charge of the world
I would make snow and sun at the same time.
And I would make snow in spring and spring come at Easter.
Natasha
If I were in charge of the world
I would make it all icy and ski
Just ski’s and ice and snow and people
And the world would never break.
Nathan J.
If I were in charge of the world
I would stop the day of doom by freezing the world
And if I couldn’t stop it
I would invent floaties that worked in the air
And I’d call them puffball rockets.
Sacha
If I were in charge of the world
I would do cooking.
I’d play with babies I would give them blue cars and red cars
And I’d give them a hundred of dollars.
Omar
If I were in charge of the world
I would play with grandma
And let her play with my toys
And let Grandma play with my Barbie’s.
